From Duality to Oneness"As long as we remain in the field of duality there will always be a subject (me) and object (my experience of the world). For each of us, every moment is a new opportunity to recognize Oneness, when knower, knowing and knowingness alone remain held in awareness."
...excerpted from Walk on Water: How to Make Change Easier The idiom of western culture is steeped in duality - good and evil, heaven and hell, right and wrong. We use the language of duality to describe our human experience and we are constantly honing our skills to navigate the pairs of opposites found in relative existence. We have a more difficult time with the concepts of eternity, infinity, immortality, and God. Here we enter into the territory of Oneness, beyond the sets of opposites, beyond and time and space, body and mind. Eastern thought teaches that beyond fear and desire we reach the underlying reality of all. How do we reach beyond dualities such as life and death, into the realm of immortality and Oneness? What lies beyond the limitations of time and space in the domains of eternity and infinity? To find the answers to these questions science has made various investigations into the paranormal, the quantum field, and non-linear string theory. But before modern science, ancient scientists called Yogis were making experiments into the nature of reality. Their journey took them from duality to Oneness based on these simple principles and practices: concentration, focus, awareness, and energy. You can change your life and make the journey from duality to Oneness by consistent practice of these principles. Many people are so busy today that they cannot unwind from their day. Prescription sleeping pills and other medications for the dis-ease of agitation are at an all time high. Yet, the peace people are craving is not that difficult to find! Unfortunately, there has not been very much education and information available on where to look - which is inside. Here is the key: close your eyes and just watch your breath for a few minutes. After only a few minutes, you will find that the thoughts and the emotions attached to those thoughts fade away as you continue to concentrate your attention on your breath. Eventually, the attention on your breath will settle, and you will be at the place where duality does not exist. You have gone from duality to Oneness because you have reached the source of duality, and non-duality. It is not that hard to find when you know where to look! I regularly coach clients who wish to succeed but are consistently stopped by their own self doubt, creating a state of separation from their source of their power. The very act of wondering, "Will I succeed or not?" saps their ability to act and succeed. The best way to be confident and take action is to be in Oneness with the action you wish to take. I remember vividly how a gold medal Olympic athlete responded when asked, "What does it take to win the gold medal?" He answered something akin to: I forget about competing and remember I love to swim! Become united with the source of the action and success is a byproduct. Time and space, body and mind, and material existence all exist in the field of duality. To transcend means to go beyond this field, from duality to Oneness. And yet in transcending duality we must also include duality in the Oneness: A raindrop falls into the ocean. It is separate from the ocean (in the field of duality) until it merges into the ocean. At that time what happens to the raindrop? Does it lose its existence? No, it has just made the journey from duality to Oneness. I have written Walk on Water to help people make experiments, in the tradition of the ancient Yogis as they walk the path from duality to Oneness. Although the ideas presented here are metaphysical, their application is imminently practical. A critical component of mastering change is unfolding the wisdom of the unchanging, and we call that a miracle, such as walking on water.
